MR Enterograms for Crohn's & Colitis
More physicians are choosing MR for patients with Crohn's disease because its effectiveness is comparable to CT — without radiation.
MR Enterography (MRE) is critical to determining the extent, disease activity and presence of complications related to
Crohn’s Disease. With MRI technology innovations and Shields’ special protocols to shorten the length of the scan, MRE is now the imaging procedure of choice in multiple clinical settings.
The Benefits of MR Enterography
Patients with Crohn's disease often require repeat studies that in the past were performed using CT scans. CT scans require radiation and studies have shown that up to 10% of patients with Crohn's disease have had a dose of radiation that can actually lead to a secondary cancer. MRI is a much better technique than CT and is also much safer for the patient.
Dr. Stephen Sweriduk, Shields Chief Medical Officer and Radiologist, reviews the advantages of MR Enterography for patient's with Crohn's Disease.
Frequently Asked Questions
Enterography is often used to help confirm a Crohn’s diagnosis and assess the extent of disease. It can also assess disease activity and response to treatment, exclude penetrating complications, and evaluate for stricturing disease. Several studies have demonstrated that CTE or MRE alters management plans in up to 50% of Crohn’s Disease patients.

What does the American College of Radiology say?
Using the American College of Radiology (ACR) Appropriateness Criteria, it shows clearly that in the majority of instances, MR Enterography is the imaging procedure of choice in multiple clinical settings.
